COVID 19: What You Say Matters..

As I write this our very fabric of our society is being torn apart by overly emotional and opinion-based speeches by leaders and those who want to take advantage of the pandemic.

Clear and rational communications by leaders, scientists and our own communications is essential during this Coronavirus Pandemic.  What you say and how you say it matters, as there is panic and emotional distress at this time, many people fear for their lives. The spoken word has the POWER to transform, influence, inspire or terrify!

When you are speaking to anyone in a time of crisis it is important to plan out your communication.

Proper organization of your material helps the listener understand the facts and your communication. Even the most forceful personality will fail to convince his/her listener if his/her material is disorderly, emotional, and messy statements cause alarm and confusion. To build a rational, informative and persuasive message, you help your listeners by providing them with guidelines. As you think/write your communication focus on what you want your listener to remember. Write your last sentence first and use it as a guide.

The T3 model, each part is important and serves a specific function:

T1. Tell Them What You Are Going To Tell Them ~ The Opening

In the opening, the subject and the purpose of the communication is explained. This is where you capture your listener’s attention, make a connection, and give them an overview of your topic. It has to “focus” the attention your audience! It needs to be relevant to the current situation.

T2. Tell Them ~ The Body

Logic is the strength of the body. The body provides the strength and flexibility for the presentation. In the body, the major and minor ideas are developed. You amplify and simplify these ideas with appropriate visual aids. It is vital that ‘emotional’ statements are eliminated the focus is to provide information the listener can trust.

T3. Tell Them What You Told Them ~ The Close

The close provide stability for the presentation. In the ‘closing’ stage, you can summarize and leave your audience with a definite, concise impression of what is expected of them, otherwise they will make it up.

The question-and-answer process also guides the presentation to the desired outcome. Using this structure to create your communication, you will have an excellent outline with which to deliver your message. When you speak you have the POWER to transform, influence, inspire or terrify!
