The Politics of Fear

leadership development program

Fear is the foundation of most governments.” — John Adams

Turn on your TV, iPad, computer or open any newspaper, and you will find a politician using fear of “something or someone” to get emotionally involved. Then there are reports of government corruption, corporate scoundrels, racist policing and mass migrations of refugees. The world is entering a new phase, one in which the politics of fear are taking control, fanning the flames of discontent, calling for the downtrodden and disenfranchised to rise up – which seems to be everyone!

The language of fear and discontent is spoken effectively by politicians on both sides, shouted by media pundits from their cable TV pulpits, marketed by corporations, and codified into bureaucratic laws that do little to make our lives safer or more secure.

In the UK, it was so well played that “BREXIT” became a reality and ensuing chaos has divide a nation against itself. The current US election is following a similar path and Donald Trump is the master of innuendo, false hood and diversion and he is teaching everyone else to do the same, all are fanning the flames of division and hatred.

As the leader within your own business/community the politics of fear can permeate and persuasively infuse every communication, polarizing everyone into separate camps. This can tear communities, companies, teams and families apart.

The politics of fear distracts and divides us, and drives us to make emotion based decisions, which later we may regret. It discourages us from thinking analytically and believing that we have any part to play in solving the problems before us. Instead, we point the finger at the other person or vote for this politician or support this group, because they are the ones who will fix it. Except that they can’t and won’t fix the problems plaguing our communities.

When you speak you can and do make difference! Please be open to other opinions, show respect for the differences in the world or we will see more mass shootings, migrations, global warming, forest fires, and finally social and economic collapse.

Yes, this is a self-interested plea as I like my world and I have decided to resist joining in the politics of fear and I ask you to join me in resisting “The Politics of Fear”.
