On Becoming Authentic

Most people would like to be more authentic…

It does sound appealing being authentic, being real all the time, but for many the fear of being seen overwhelms them and they hold onto masks.

“Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance.”

I coach established authentic and aspiring authentic leaders I hear about the lack of authenticity everywhere. This is not just about leaders, it is about everyone.

I see how much inauthentic behaviour contributes to the apathy in many organizations. For me it’s refreshing and pleasure when I do encounter authentic people who really make a difference just by showing up.

Authentic people:

  1. Have a clear understanding of who they are and what they want to become
  2. They are willing to work hard and change to create the life they want.
  3. They naturally inspire others to also become authentic and show up

In my research on leadership and authenticity, I have observed that life’s events (marriage, career, children, illness and death) require all of us to move beyond what we know about ourselves. This triggers strong impulses as we try to protect our identities: When we are in the midst of change and turmoil, we retreat to familiar behaviors and styles, which of course don’t work!! The life’s moments will challenge our sense of self are the ones that can teach us the most! About authenticity and leading effectively. Only by acknowledging we are works in progress and evolving and challenging preconceived ideas of who and what we are can we experience our own authenticity.
